Preparing Your Heating System For The Winter Ahead

If you want to enjoy the beauty of Autumn, North Carolina is a great place to enjoy it. The abundance of trees lend to a bounty of gorgeous colors when the leaves change. Who doesn’t love when the air turns crisp and cool, and people gather outside around campfires. Just the thought of fall weather can put a smile on the faces of many North Carolinians, especially after a long, hot summer season.  however with fall brings the cooler temperatures and the need for heating on those chilly nights.

Unfortunately, fall never seems long enough. Before you know it, the weather turns cold and you feel the need to turn on your heating system in your home. Before you do, it is always a good idea to have the heating system looked at by an HVAC professional to make sure your system is going to work correctly throughout the whole winter. While you are waiting for your HVAC professional from Biggs HVAC to check your heaters and heating system, there are a couple of things that you can do as a homeowner or renter to make sure your system is working properly.

If you turn on your heating system and you smell a faint burning smell, chances are everything is okay. A lot of times, if a heating system hasn’t been used in several months, it will give off a faint burning smell as the dust burns off. If the smell lasts for more than a few hours, however, check your air filters. They may need to be replaced.

Do not put unnecessary strain on your heating system by constantly turning the heat up when you are cold, or turning the system on and off as you leave your home and come back. While the HVAC professionals at Biggs HVAC do everything they can to minimize a big bill when repairs have to be made, the sad truth is that anywhere you go, you could be looking at hundreds of dollars in repairs that could have been prevented if the heating system was not maintained.

Go around the interior of your home and check your windows and doors for leaks and cracks that could let the heat in your home escape. Also, if you are using a fireplace in your home, be sure to close the fireplace damper when you are not using it. While you are at it, make sure that none of your furniture is covering your heating vents too.
