A Spring Cleaning Checklist For Your HVAC Unit

Now that the weather in North Carolina is warming up, this is the perfect time for a thorough clean-up of your HVAC unit. Before you know it, the scorching heat of North Carolina summers will be upon us, and at Biggs HVAC, we cannot think of a worse time to find out that your air conditioning is not running as well as it should be. There are few worse things in life than broken AC on a hot summer day, so here is a list of items to check out concerning your HVAC system before summer arrives.

Check your air filters. Your air filters should be replaced regularly. Many air filters need to be replaced monthly, but there are some, like HEPA filters, that do not have to be changed as often. Replacing your air filters is imperative for the life of your heating and air conditioning system. While you are at it, give your bathroom fans a cleaning as well.

Clear the area around your HVAC unit. Every few months, you should inspect the area around your HVAC unit and clean around the system by getting rid of overgrown grass and weeds or debris that may interfere with the functioning of the HVAC unit. This also makes it easier for your HVAC professional to get to the unit, in case of an emergency.

In order to get the most out of your AC this summer, do a walk through of your home, checking the windows and doors for any holes or faulty weather stripping. Fix holes in your screen doors, and place caulking around windows in order to keep out humidity and heat. Make sure that your windows are closing properly.

The best way to make sure your HVAC unit is ready for hotter temperatures is to call a trusted HVAC professional and have them inspect the unit themselves.
