First, check your window sills and baseboards to make sure there are no cracks that could be allowing cold air in. Make sure that the seals at the bottom of your doors leading to outside are good so that cold air cannot enter your home that way. Also, if you have an attic or basement, make sure that the entrance points to either are sealed correctly.

When the sun is out, let the light in through windows as much as possible. The heat from the sun can help to warm up your space. When night falls though, be sure to close your curtains in order to retain some of that heat in your home. If you have a fireplace in your house, close the flue when you are not using it. Also, using your oven to cook can help to warm up your kitchen area. Make sure to check that none of your furniture could be blocking a heating vent preventing heat from your heating system getting to you.

Space heaters require you to use an abundance of caution with them. Be sure to keep any flammable material several feet away from the space heater, and turn it off when you are not in the room. When it comes to saving money on your heating bill, if you have a furnace turn the heat down by eight to ten degrees when you leave the home. If you have a heat pump system only reduce the thermostat by 2 degrees. another way to save is to set your thermostat no higher than 68 to 70 degrees.
